The MOT Test

Everyone who uses a vehicle on the road must keep it in a roadworthy condition.  The MOT (Ministry of Transport) test checks that vehicles meet road safety and environmental standards. The first MOT test for your vehicle is required when it is three years old and annually thereafter (some vehicles used commercially are required to be tested more frequently)

All of our MOT testers are approved by the Vehicle and Operating Service Agency (VOSA). For further information please visit the VOSA home page at https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/VOSA

The MOT Certificate:

The MOT certificate confirms that at the time of the test, without dismantling it, the vehicle met the minimum acceptable environmental and road safety standards required by law.  It does not mean that the vehicle is road worthy for the length of time the certificate is valid and you are responsible for keeping your vehicle in good, road worthy condition.  The MOT certificate is also no guarantee of the general mechanical condition of your vehicle.  The test will not cover items such as condition of the engine, clutch, gear box etc.

Pass or Fail?

Our MOT testers will check the vehicle thoroughly and either issue a Pass or Fail certificate. If your vehicle fails the test your certificate will list all the failures. The testers can also issue an Advisory Notice. if they notice something  that you need to be made aware of, even if your vehicle passes the test on this occasion.

Re-tests:

If your vehicle fails a test,  there will be no retest fee provided work is carried out and your vehicle is re-presented within 10 working days

Vehicles exempt from MOT:

Some vehicles don’t have to take an MOT test. These include:

       •tractors

       •goods vehicles powered by electricity

•any vehicle less than 3 years old

•cars and motorbikes made before 1960
