Health and fitness


The health and fitness development team is responsible for developing and implementing projects and initiatives that help to increase activity levels to benefit the physical, social and mental health of local people.

We initiate and manage projects which enhance and promote activity within Walsall, establishing wherever possible partnership funding and working. Close links are maintained with NHS Walsall, with Smoking Cessation, Community Dietetics and the health and fitness team combining to develop a primary prevention strategy group and network.

The Health and Fitness team are regularly highlighted locally and nationally  for their good work. Most recently the WAY team won health improvement initiative of the year at the 2009 Black Country sport and physical activity awards, for their success with the Fun4life programme. They beat off competition from the nationally recognised MEND programme. Also the Walsall Walk On programme has been accredited by Natural England and was highlighted for best practice.

The health and fitness programme pages for both adults and young people detail a range of the various activities the team undertake. Whatever your current activity level and/or fitness interest we are sure we have something for you.

Young Persons Health and Fitness Programmes

The health and fitness team are responsible for developing and implementing projects and initiatives that help to increase activity levels to benefit the physical, social and mental health of local people.

We initiate and manage projects which enhance and promote activity and well being within Walsall, establishing wherever possible partnership funding and working. Close links are maintained with the Healthy Weight Team at NHS Walsall, and National Child Measurement Programme (NCMP), to develop primary prevention strategies and networks within Walsall.

Within the health and fitness team, the Walsall Active Youth team (WAY) provide a variety of programmes for young people which take place in the community and schools. The WAY Programme was initially funded by Sport England’s Active England fund and is now support by additional funding from NHS Walsall. The programmes main purpose is to develop and deliver intervention for the prevention of childhood obesity within Walsall.

In order to access alot of the programmes delivered by the WAY team, young people generally pass through the WAY4ward programme initially. WAY4ward is Walsall’s free individual exercise advice and support service for young people. Whatever your childs current activity level and/or fitness interest we are sure we have something for them.

Adult Health and Fitness Programmes

The health and fitness team are responsible for developing and implementing projects and initiatives that help to increase activity levels to benefit the physical, social and mental health of local people.

We initiate and manage projects which enhance and promote activity and well being within Walsall, establishing wherever possible partnership funding and working. Close links are maintained with the Healthy Weight Team at NHS Walsall to develop primary prevention strategies and networks within Walsall.

Within Walsall the health and fitness team provide a variety of specialised programmes for adults which take place at a number of community venues across the borough These programmes range from individual advice services , to specialised exercise sessions for people with cardiac problems to people who suffer or are at risk of falling.

In order to access alot of the programmes delivered, adults generally pass through the time to change programme initially.Time to change is Walsall’s free individual exercise advice and support service for adults, so whatever your current activity level and/or fitness interest we are sure we have something for you
